256 KB of nonexpandable video memory.
Video Controller
Uses Western Digital 90C20 video controller chip.
The WD 90C20 provides:
Built-in color to gray-scale mapping for monochrome monitors and LCD panels
Monitor presence and type sensing
Low power mode
Hidden registers for support of LCD display parameters
Maximum resolution of 1024 x 768, 4 colors
Monitor sensing is performed during POST. If a monitor is present, the chip drives the
monitor. If a monochrome monitor is detected, color to gray-scale mapping is enabled. If
no monitor is present, the LCD panel is driven. Colors are mapped to one of 16 shades of
gray based on the luminance of the color.
Video BIOS
Video BIOS is incorporated in the system's flash EPROM. See Memory
for details.
Fast Video
ON = When the computer is booted and FAST VIDEO BIOS option is set to ON,
the computer copies the video BIOS ROM code to faster RAM memory (called shadowing).
If the video BIOS is shadowed (ON setting), it appears at C0000h.
OFF = 32 KB is freed to be used by EMS MEMORY. Some older applications may
require this option to be set to OFF if the application expects to find the video
BIOS at a specific address.
If the video BIOS is not shadowed (OFF setting), it appears at E0000h.
Video Port
The built-in VGA port uses a 15-pin high-density D-shell connector for an external
monitor.
LCD Display
The LCD's maximum resolution is 640 x 480 with 16 colors.
The LCD display is capable of 16 shades of gray. The WD 90C20 display controller converts
color VGA to shades of gray based on the luminance of the color. A shade of gray is based
on the weighted sum of the primary color values: 59% green + 30% red + 11% blue.
Some color graphics and text applications modify the color palette such that the color's
luminance is quantified to the same shade of gray. In applications that do not allow the
user to change the color palette, there may be a compatibility problem when using the LCD
display. To improve the contrast of the LCD display, the user can toggle the intensify bit
in character attribute bytes by pressing <CTRL-ALT-F12>.
